Photography Tips | Off-camera flash and reducing background distractions | Before and After

I hope you’ve been enjoying these Before+After posts on the blog! I plan to continue posting them on the first Tuesday of each month. They are so fun to write about and share, and I’ve really enjoyed reading your comments and hearing from many of you!

For this image, I used an off-camera flash just opposite of the windows, pointed up towards the ceiling, to fill in some of the shadows of the room. If I hadn’t, and I tried to expose for the faces, the back window would have been entirely blown out (i.e. white) with some of the details of the window frame also blown out. Sometimes I like that look, but this time I wanted to preserve the details of the scene outside the window. If I didn’t use the flash, and exposed for the details in the window, the boys’ faces would have been extremely dark.

You can see a clue that flash was used by the little bit of shadow on the back of the chair of the top image!

Here’s one more from this session:

Off camera flash and background distraction removal, editing tips on a family session at home by Jessica Nip Photography

For the final image here, I cropped in a little closer so that less of the gold floor lamp (bottom left) would be visible, removed the power outlet to the left of the arm chair, and removed the car at the top right. Fill flash was again used so that I could keep some detail in the windows!
