I usually photograph families in my studio or on-location. For this Toronto family, “on-location” meant at their home…which was midway through a home renovation!
When they asked if it might be okay to do this, of COURSE I said yes! What a wonderful opportunity to document this transitional time for them. The family arranged the date with their contractor to make sure the house would be safe to walk around in (i.e. no live wires sticking out or anything like that!), and we went ahead once things were approved.
Going into an unknown space is always a welcome challenge for me: figuring out where the soft light is, making sure backgrounds aren’t too cluttered or distracting, and all the while being a silly goof to keep the kids entertained. It really gets my creative juices flowing!
It didn’t hurt that the rooms of the home were wonderfully spacious with gorgeous picture windows and high ceilings.
What are your thoughts on unconventional family portrait locations? Yay or nay?
